Is an eyebrow transplant permanent?

Is an eyebrow transplant permanent?

Mostly, yes. What gets moved are your own follicles, taken from the scalp, and after they settle into the brow they just keep growing. The one thing people don’t expect is that they carry their scalp habits along. They grow longer than ordinary brow hair, so a bit of trimming comes with the deal. And the result isn’t instant. In many cases it takes up to a year, and a few grafts may not survive.

According to Dr. Monisha Kapoor, a Plastic Surgeon in Saket, Delhi, “Two things catch patients off guard. First, the new brow hairs need trimming, because they come from the scalp and carry on like scalp hair. Second, the shedding. Somewhere between week two and week six most of the transplanted hairs fall out before the new ones come in. When people know this beforehand they don’t panic, and they wait for the right time to judge the result.”

How an Eyebrow Transplant Works

The hair usually comes from the back or side of the scalp, since the hair there tends to last the longest.

Every graft is one single hair. The surgeon makes a tiny opening, places the hair in it and angles it almost flat against the skin, so it grows in the same direction real brow hair does. Most brows need a few hundred grafts each.

People with thin brows from over-plucking, scars, burns or certain medical causes are the usual candidates. If an active condition is causing the hair loss, though, the outcome is harder to predict.

It’s generally done under local anaesthesia in a single sitting, and you go home the same day.

Shape matters as much as the number of hairs. Our Brows page explains how brow design and restoration are approached.

Is Eyebrow Transplant Permanent? What Results Look Like Over Time

Most of the transplanted hairs shed somewhere between weeks two and six. Your brows can end up looking exactly like they did before the procedure, and that’s normal, so don’t worry.

Around month three or four the new hairs begin to show, though they’re often patchy at first.

The final density and shape can take up to a year to settle. Some grafts may not take, so a small touch-up is sometimes needed.

After that the hairs keep growing like scalp hair. Trimming every couple of weeks is common, and the odd hair may grow in the wrong direction.

If you’d like a non-surgical option, or something to fill in while the hair grows, our Permanent Makeup page explains how pigment-based options work.

What Decides Whether an Eyebrow Transplant Is Right for You?

Start with why your brows are thin in the first place, whether it’s over-plucking, scars, burns or a medical cause. Then comes the quality and amount of donor hair you have, and the shape and fullness you’re hoping to end up with.

It also helps to ask yourself honestly if you’re fine with trimming and grooming these hairs for life. And you’ll need patience. Results take months, and part of that wait looks worse than where you began.

Key Takeaways

  • Is eyebrow transplant permanent? For most people, yes, though the hairs will need regular trimming.
  • Shedding in the first few weeks is normal. New hairs grow in from around month three.
  • Eyebrow transplant results can take up to a year to show fully.
  • You’re more likely to be a good candidate if the cause of hair loss is clear and your expectations are realistic.

FAQs

  1. Will I have to keep trimming transplanted eyebrows?
Often, yes. Since the hairs come from the scalp, they keep growing like scalp hair and end up longer than natural brow hair. Plenty of people trim every couple of weeks and shape them the way they would shape the hair on their head.
  2. Do transplanted eyebrow hairs fall out?
Most of them do, usually within the first two to six weeks, and it’s a normal part of healing. The new hairs come through over the following months, so your brows can look sparse for a while before they fill in.
  3. How long before eyebrow transplant results show?
New hairs usually appear around the three to four month mark, often patchy at first. Full density and shape can take up to a year, and if a few grafts don’t take, a small touch-up may be needed.
  4. Is an eyebrow transplant better than microblading?
Not really a better-or-worse thing, they’re built differently. A transplant uses your own living hair and is meant to be permanent, but it’s a surgery and the wait for results is long. Microblading and similar pigment options fade over a few years and need repeating, though there’s no downtime.
